Dutch composer, theatre maker and theorist Dick Raaijmaker (Kid Baltan) undeniably belongs to the groundbreakers of electronic and tape music, together with the likes of Morton Subotnick, Terry Riley, Delia Derbyshire, Edgard Varèse, Karlheinz Stockhausen,… .

Almost 60 years after Raaijmakers’ first electronic compositions, Berlin resident Thomas Ankersmit presents a homage to his fellow countryman.
Ankersmit about his creation.

‘The music is, just like the electronic music of Raaijmakers, made entirely with analogue instruments (serge synthesizer, contact microphone, speaker and a tape recorder every now and then to modify tempo). The music consists pretty much entirely of various forms of feedback and a number of sinusoidal tone generators.

I’ve mainly oriented myself toward Raaijmakers’ electronic music from the sixties and the ideas behind it:

“the loudspeaker as instrument”, “erratic electronica” created by “incorrectly” connecting it, “colonies of impulses that enter into all sorts of relationships with each other”, “holophone sound landscapes that the listener to wander through” static fields of sound that the listener can pick and choose from and that come into being by means of “otoacoustic emissions” (sounds that are actually produced within the ear of the listener).’

Our evening will commence with the screening of ‘Room 306’, a documentary from 2006 about Raaijmakers’ life and work, directed by Henk Lamers and Jeanne de Bont (75 min.)

Publisher Het Balanseer will be present with a number of copies of Raaijmakers’ De Methode. This text written as prose poem conjures up memories of Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus and Lao-Tzu’s Tao-te Ching. Poetic and yet precise, Raaijmakers describes how man deals with technical constructs, full of striking observations that offer the reader unexpected insights and they are often particularly humorous too.
