The Last Waltz’ – the Band by Winterland ’76 & Special Guests, 25 novembre 2016 18:00, Ancienne Belgique – AB
◊ ‘THE LAST WALTZ’ – THE BAND BY WINTERLAND ’76 & SPECIAL GUESTS + DJ-SET & ARTIST TALK
◊ The Band lives! A tribute, exact 40 years after ‘The Last Waltz’
Exactly 40 years after swan song ‘The Last Waltz’ – on 25 November 1976 in The Winterland Ballroom, San Francisco – a Belgian delegation of top musicians – entirely appropriated named Winterland ’76 – comes up with a tribute to The Band. Bob Dylan’s iconic Canadian backing band turned out the inimitable debut ‘Music From Big Pink’ in ’68 and forever changed the face of the country, americana, blues- & roots-rock and soul scene with worldly songs like ‘Tears Of Rage’, ‘Chest Fever’, ‘The Weight’ and ‘The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down’ (from successor ‘The Band’ from ’69). The legendary band encompassing Levon Helm (drums, vocals), Robbie Robertson (guitar, vocals), Rick Danko (bass, vocals), Garth Hudson (keys) and Richard Manuel (piano, vocals) was a source of inspiration to the world’s greats, folks like Grateful Dead, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Elvis Costello, Pink Floyd and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
WINTERLAND ’76 & Special Guests
The guys from Winterland ’76 though it was time for a fitting tribute, something far from a cover-show but rather an own interpretation. The band consists of Gianni Marzo (Isbells), Piet De Pessemier (Mad About Mountains), Maarten Moesen (Admiral Freebee & Bony King), Dimitri Vossen (Birds That Change Colour), Hans De Prins (Shun Club & Broken Glass Heroes) and Brecht Plasschaert (Marble Sounds & Winterslag). The common theme is ‘The Last Waltz’ farewell concert where greats like Bob Dylan, Ronnie Hawkins, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Muddy Waters, Dr. John, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Ronnie Wood, Neil Diamond, Emmylou Harris and The Staple Singers also came to play along.
So of course we went in search of the Belgian equivalents of all those first-class artists, a series of special guests to make your jaw drop: Paul Ambach aka Boogie Boy, Neeka, Radio Candip, Steven De bruyn (El Fish, Roland, The Rhythm Junks), Iwein Segers, Koen Kohlbacher (Birds That Change Colour), Niels Hendrix (yep, written by Jimi! Fence, Birds That Change Colour), Annelies Van Dinter (Echo Beatty) and Gaëtan Vandewoude (Isbells). Who embodies who amongst the guests of ‘The Last Waltz’ concert at the time? We’ll leave that up to your imagination. But we know now already that it will be just as legendary as in ’76! Who knows, we might even see author/journalist Jeroen Olyslaegers turn up with an ode to the Beat Generation/Beat Poetry of the times, just like during the original concert. Exciting, no?
DJ-SET MICHA VOLDERS
We’ll be concluding with an idiosyncratic DJ set from the hand of creative jack-of-all-trades Micha Volders (Ex-El Guapo Stuntteam, Ex-Vermin Twins, Meteor Musik, Chrome Brulée) who will send you dancing into the night with an unconventional selection of songs.
