Magdalena Kožená & Malcolm Martineau, 15 août 2016 11:00, Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh
Kožená sings Dvořák, Wolf, Strauss and Fauré.
With her celebrated silvery, silky voice and her intense identification with the music she’s performing, Czech-born mezzo soprano Magdalena Kožená is one of the finest classical vocalists performing today, her recitals bound to move and to astonish.
Prior to her performance with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Robin Ticciati on 18 August, Kožená presents a recital of dramatic, moving songs with Edinburgh-born pianist and EIF stalwart Malcolm Martineau, one of the most brilliant song recital pianists in the world.
She begins with the lyrical Op 2 Lieder by her compatriot Dvořák, before a selection of Hugo Wolf’s miniature musical dramas setting tales of love, loss and the supernatural by poet Eduard Mörike.
After Richard Strauss’s virtuosic Op 67 songs depicting the fragile mind of Shakespeare’s Ophelia, Kožená sings Fauré’s three atmospheric chansons Op 23, and concludes with Schoenberg immersing himself in the popular music of the 1900s with his cheeky early Cabaret Songs.
