Emerson String Quartet

Emerson String Quartet, 19 août 2016 11:00, Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh

Emerson String Quartet play Tchaikovsky, Schubert and Haydn.

With enormous experience and authority gained over nearly 40 years of playing together, yet still a bracing freshness to their electrifying performances, the eminent Emerson Quartet has an exalted place among chamber groups. The four members have performed all over the world, their recitals greeted with reverence and admiration, and have given many memorable International Festival recitals.

For 2016, they bring a trio of subtly radical yet classic string quartets to the Queen’s Hall. Schubert’s ‘Rosamunde’ Quartet is a lyrical, introspective piece revered for its huge dramatic and emotional scope. Tchaikovsky’s dark, turbulent Third Quartet marks an enormous outpouring of sadness, with some of the composer’s most heartfelt music. The Emersons open their concert with Haydn’s sly Quartet in D major Op 76 No 5, which subverts quartet conventions in music that’s witty, joyful yet deeply moving.
