Danielle de Niese & Dunedin Consort, 13 août 2016 11:00, Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh
International opera star Danielle de Niese is one of today’s most sought-after sopranos, with a musical personality as dazzling as her vocal virtuosity, and praised for her sparkling, vivid singing on opera and concert stages worldwide.
For her Festival debut, she joins Scotland’s own leading period-performance ensemble. The Dunedin Consort, under brilliant Music Director John Butt, are as passionate in performance as they are provocative in their musical scholarship.
Their concert’s centrepiece is Handel’s dramatic cantata Il delirio amoroso, almost a mini-opera of remarkable intensity, in which the abandoned Chloris descends to the underworld in search of her cruelly uncaring beloved. They complete their programme with arias from Handel operas including the poignant and much-loved ‘Lascia ch’io pianga’ from Rinaldo, as well as ‘Scoglio d’immota fronte’ from Scipione and the sparkling ‘Da tempeste’ from Giulio Cesare.
